Ecko Getting Up Street Jam Pt1

For those of you that weren't aware of the Marc Ecko Getting Up Block Party in 2005, it was an event created by fashion designer Marc Ecko to pay homage to the long term graffiti legends that helped create the language and aesthetic that we in Graffiti Culture all enjoy today.

The premiss of the Jam was to create replicated New York Subway cars and allow 20 artist's to paint them at an outdoor festival for public enjoyment. The artist were all high calibre influential artists, the likes of T-Kid,Cope 2 and CES. The subway cars were to be painted and then exhibited in varied places throughout NYC. Check out this clip to see a piece graffiti history recreated in 2005 featuring Terrible T-Kid 170, Cope 2, CES aka Wish.

What was interesting about this story is that the City of New York whom had issued the permit for the event had also retracted the permits validity. The result was a media battle and a trip to the lawyers for Marc Ecko to defend his First Ammendment rights. The City of NY eventually ruled in favour of the permit and the event went ahead successfully.
