South Africa Part 1 - Dali Wall

Not every one has the oppurtunity to go to South Africa. It is far away for most Graffiti cultures and has an intense history of violence and racism that few of can ever understand that shapes and moulds the local people. See here the first part of our new weekly series...

Luckily the future of South Africa has improved somewhat for all South Africans in the recent present. Change however is not that fast and as a result the unique art and in our more specific interest, graffiti, is a direct reflection of the people, the history and their condition.

Considering all these points, one crew called PCP crew, located in Johannesburg have updated us with some of their recent projects. To start this look at what the guys have been upto, we would like to introduce their Dali Wall, inspired by the artwork of (and the man himself), Salvador dali. This is what the guys told us about the mission:

The Dali wall was something we did with our friend Kine from Bremen Germany (NK) to start the year off with. We thought it would be an ill concept to create to and basically just have fun with. Dali’s character and features were really strong and it was dope to translate it into a world of graffiti.

The wall is based in Newtown Johannesburg, which is a cultural hub for the arts in South Africa, with it being home to the famous Market theatre. This spot is really great to paint at. There are a lot of dope pieces around the area, and is now host to the ‘back to the city’ jam every year over Easter which features the countries best Emcees, Breakers, DJ's and Graffiti writers the country has to offer.
